3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Malibu Area

No injuries or damage reported

Malibu, Calif. (AP) - A 3.6-magnitude earthquake shook the Malibu area Friday night, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck at 10:23 p.m. PDT and was centered about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of Malibu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The shaking was felt across a wide area, including parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it had received no reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake was the strongest to hit the Malibu area since a 4.4-magnitude quake in 1994.

What to do during an earthquake

  • Stay calm and do not panic.
  • Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stop.
  • If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines.

After an earthquake

  • Check yourself and others for injuries.
  • Check your home for damage.
  • If you see any downed power lines, stay away and call 911.
  • If you have a gas leak, turn off the gas and call 911.
  • If you have a water leak, turn off the water and call a plumber.
